Written & Photographs by Samantha Diaz

Charleston, South Carolina, is one of those rare cities that feels like a step back in time—in the best way possible. With its pastel houses, horse-drawn carriages, and oak trees spilling with Spanish moss, it’s no wonder this historic Southern gem continues to top travel lists year after year. Whether you’re in town for a quick weekend getaway or just passing through, this mini guide highlights some of our favorite spots to help you make the most of your time.

From peaceful gardens and historic landmarks to indie coffee shops and colorful alleyways, there’s something here for everyone. Keep reading for a curated mix of sights, stops, and sips across the Holy City.

What to See & Do

Cypress Gardens

Possibly one of Charleston’s best-kept secrets, Cypress Gardens is a photographer’s dream. With glassy blackwater trails and moss-draped cypress trees, it feels straight out of a Southern fairytale.

Battery Park & White Point Garden

Located along the waterfront, this scenic stretch is perfect for a leisurely stroll and a peek at Charleston’s most iconic antebellum homes.

Rainbow Row

A must-see. These vibrantly painted houses on East Bay Street are some of the most photographed buildings in the South.

Boone Hall Plantation

Rich in both beauty and history, Boone Hall offers house tours, gardens, and a powerful look at the past through preserved slave cabins and exhibits.

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens

These gardens are lush, romantic, and full of wildlife. Bring your camera—you’ll want to remember every corner.

Stoll’s Alley

Tucked between historic homes, this hidden alleyway feels like a secret. Great for a quiet walk and the occasional spontaneous photo shoot.

King Street

Boutiques, bookstores, coffee shops, and cocktail bars—King Street has a little bit of everything for your Charleston mood.

Historic Charleston City Market

Over 200 years old and still buzzing. Browse handmade goods, chat with local artisans, and pick up a sweetgrass basket while you're at it.

American Theater

Even if you’re not catching a show, stop by for a photo of this restored Art Deco landmark. It’s charming day or night.

Where to Grab Coffee

Clerks Coffee Co.

Located inside the Emeline Hotel, Clerks is all vintage vibes and quality espresso. Grab a seat and stay awhile.

Sugar Bakeshop

Tucked away and totally sweet—this bakery is known for its cupcakes, cookies, and small-batch charm. Don’t miss the garden patio out back.

Harken Cafe & Bakery

A stylish and inviting space with standout coffee and a fresh, seasonal menu. It’s everything you want in a brunchy coffee break.

Second State Coffee

Modern, minimal, and really good at what they do. A go-to for espresso purists and slow mornings.

Kudu Coffee & Craft Beer

A local staple with a chill courtyard and the perfect mix of caffeine and craft beer, depending on your mood.

Sightsee

Part design shop, part café, all-around aesthetic. A great stop for iced matcha and a souvenir tee.

Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, Charleston has a way of pulling you in with its beauty and warmth. This mini guide barely scratches the surface—but it’s a solid start to your time in the Lowcountry.
