BLOOM Magazine had the privilege of sitting down with Ruschell Gladden, Patient Access Director at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, who shared insights into her inspiring career journey and the values that drive her professional and personal life. Ruschell began her tenure at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery on July 7, 2010, as a Patient Services Representative and has impressively climbed the ranks to her current position.

"Wow, it is hard to believe it will be 14 years this year," Ruschell reminisced. Her ascent through roles such as Front Desk Trainer, Team Leader, Assistant Manager, and Manager, epitomizes her dedication and growth in the field.
Her inspiration to pursue a career in healthcare administration came from a deeply personal place. "My grandmother was my biggest inspiration," Ruschell shared, detailing how her grandmother's community service, including volunteering with Meals on Wheels and visiting sick community members, instilled in her the value of service to others. This foundation of compassion, combined with her interest in orthopaedics and neurosurgery spurred by her background as a college athlete and as a mother of a football player, directed her towards her current specialty.
In her role as Patient Access Director, Ruschell finds immense fulfillment in fostering the professional and personal growth of her team. "Seeing others succeed professionally and personally is the most fulfilling and greatest reward as a leader," she stated, emphasizing her role as a mentor and cheerleader for her staff.

Ruschell’s life outside of work is rich with activities that bring her joy and balance, including thrift shopping, attending community outreach events, and couponing. She expressed particular excitement about her newest role as a grandmother, or "GiGi," as she affectionately calls it, which she anticipates starting soon.
A pivotal moment in Ruschell's career was her participation in her first AAOE conference as a new leader. "It was the first time I took the initiative to introduce myself to others, sparking conversations that led to lasting friendships and connections," she recalled. This experience highlighted the power of networking and personal growth in leadership.
Ruschell credits multiple mentors for their invaluable lessons, including her mother, Tenice Fair, who taught her the importance of celebrating all moments—big or small. Her professional mentors have guided her in honing her skills in authentic leadership and resilience.
At Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery, patient access is streamlined through multiple convenient locations and innovative services like walk-in clinics and virtual orthopedic assessments. "We ensure that patients can access care promptly and efficiently," Ruschell explained, highlighting the organization's commitment to patient care and satisfaction.

One heartwarming story Ruschell shared involves an elderly couple she considers as adopted grandparents. After Mr. A suffered a fall, the comprehensive care provided by Midlands enabled him to quickly return to his beloved golf course—a testament to the impact of their dedicated healthcare services.
Ruschell stays current on industry trends through conferences and networking, which she finds crucial for keeping her practice at the forefront of healthcare delivery. Her advice to those entering healthcare administration is clear: "Never stop learning, be coachable, and build meaningful relationships."
