We had the privilege of speaking with Michelle Repman-Pifer, President and CEO of Presque Isle Rehabilitation Services, LLC. With nearly three decades of experience in the workers' compensation industry, Michelle is passionate about transforming the case management model to ensure positive outcomes for injured workers.

“I founded Presque Isle Rehabilitation Services in 2002 after realizing that the traditional billable hours model in large case management companies could be reinvented,” Michelle explains. Her goal was to create a results-based approach where everyone has a positive impact. As the founder, she oversees all operations, balancing her executive responsibilities with a small caseload to stay connected with the field and maintain her skills.
Michelle's journey into workers' compensation began in 1995 after graduating from Pennsylvania State University. “I was intrigued by the private rehabilitation industry and the case management process,” she recalls, highlighting her desire to understand the psycho-social aspects of disabilities.
“I wanted to make a difference in the lives of injured workers and ensure they received the appropriate care needed for their recovery.”
Motivated by her family, employees, and the injured workers she serves, Michelle finds fulfillment in her work. “Family is my driving force, and that’s why I work so hard,” she shares. Her typical week is packed with travel, case management, and overseeing administrative operations, but she prioritizes maintaining a balance between work and home life.
Among the aspects of her job that she cherishes, Michelle emphasizes her enjoyment of working with her staff and stakeholders. “I love sharing my experience to help them grow in their careers,” she states. Currently, she is focused on developing and expanding their service line, a project she finds both challenging and rewarding.
Having built her career over the years, Michelle recognizes the importance of networking. “I engage with both traditional methods and social media,” she explains, valuing personal connections while adapting to modern communication.
As a woman leader in her field, Michelle faces unique challenges, particularly in engaging her team. “You never know what each day will bring,” she reflects. She believes that being a woman can add a caring element to her leadership style, although it sometimes leads to being perceived as intimidating when she asserts herself.
Empowering other women is important to Michelle. “We need to support each other and encourage one another through obstacles,” she asserts. Her commitment to communication, collaboration, and integrity remains the cornerstone of her approach, as she recognizes that clear communication is vital to success. Finding balance is a challenge for Michelle, but she strives for a structured schedule. “I try to take at least one day a week off to disconnect completely from work,” she shares. Advocacy for Autism Awareness and support for neurodiverse individuals are causes she deeply cares about.
Among the many books she’s read, Michelle finds value in “Emotional Intelligence,” wishing she had discovered it sooner. Reflecting on her happiest moments, she notes, “I was happiest when I got married and had children.” Walking and exercising daily serve as her favorite productivity hack, helping her stay focused and manage stress.
Over her years in the industry, Michelle has seen significant changes, particularly in technology. “When I started, we relied heavily on paper and dictation. Now, we can accomplish so much more with email and digital tools,” she explains. However, she acknowledges the challenges small businesses face in competing with larger corporations.
Proud to have been in business for over 22 years, Michelle continues to prioritize ongoing education and professional development. Her adventurous spirit shines through in her love for snorkeling in Hawaii, and she dreams of traveling the world on a yacht with her family to experience diverse cultures and cuisines.
The best career advice she’s received? “Don’t give up! Don’t let a bad yesterday ruin today.” Compassionate, driven, and ethical, Michelle embodies the spirit of leadership and is committed to making a positive impact in the workers' compensation field. “Remember, at the end of the day, you’re dealing with people. This can be one of the most rewarding and challengingcareers you have,” she concludes, highlighting the importance of empathy in the industry.
