We had the privilege of connecting with Jonica Najarian, a Senior Claims Specialist at Zurich North America, where she continues to grow her impact in the workers’ compensation space. With eight years of experience under her belt, Jonica brings compassion, strategy, and resilience to every claim she touches—all while actively pursuing her master’s degree to elevate her expertise even further.

Jonica’s entry into the field came unexpectedly. “I had just finished my bachelor's degree and was applying to corporate positions when a recruiter reached out,” she recalls. “They saw potential in my insurance background and introduced me to the world of workers’ comp. I haven’t looked back since.”
Motivated by her family, Jonica credits her children as her biggest inspiration. “They push me to keep growing. Every goal I set is rooted in wanting to build something better for them,” she says. Her weeks vary—from back-to-back mediations and meetings to quieter moments where she can catch up on documentation. Regardless of the pace, her focus remains clear: delivering meaningful outcomes for injured workers and insureds alike.
One of her favorite parts of the job? Making a difference. “I love how dynamic this work is,” she shares. “The field is constantly evolving, which keeps me learning and engaged.”
Though education is currently her main focus outside of work, she emphasizes the role networking has played in her career development. “Meeting people from across the industry has offered me insights, clarity, and direction for where I want to go next.”
Among the people Jonica admires most is Maggie Conatser, whom she describes as “brilliant, well-respected, and incredibly well-rounded.” Maggie’s example reminds Jonica of the importance of lifting others up—especially other women. “There’s no room for competition when we could be empowering each other,” she says. “That’s how we all grow.”
Though she didn’t originally imagine a future in workers’ comp, Jonica is deeply grateful for where the path has led. “People skills, strong organization, and being open to learning are non-negotiables in this field,” she explains. “You have to evolve as the industry does.” She credits her current employer, Zurich, for encouraging balance and flexibility in the workplace. “I intentionally organize my day so I can unplug and be fully present for my family. That support means everything.”
Beyond her role at Zurich, Jonica is actively engaged in her community, helping support local recovery efforts after Hurricane Helene. Her commitment to service runs deep—whether it’s on the clock or not.
Earlier this year, she was moved by Kristin Hannah’s The Women, a novel that she says brought out a wide range of emotions. “If you love historical fiction, it’s a must-read,” she recommends. Personally, Jonica describes herself as the happiest she’s ever been—grateful for a fulfilling career and the joy of raising her family.
As someone who recognizes the risk of burnout in the field, she advocates for intentional breaks and self-care. “It’s real, and it can sneak up on you if you’re not careful. I always tell others: don’t wait to take care of yourself.”
Looking at the broader industry, Jonica sees more growth opportunities than ever before. “Companies are investing in their employees, which is so important. But with so much talent retiring, we also need to bring in new faces—people who may not know about workers’ comp, but who have the potential to thrive here.”
Her nomination for a BLOOM Award in Excellence is, as she puts it, her proudest moment yet. “It felt incredible to have my work recognized. This is something I’ll carry with me.” Although she describes herself as risk-averse, Jonica reflects on returning to the U.S. alone for college as a defining moment. “That was bold for me—and it paid off,” she laughs. Today, her drive and competitive spirit continue to shape her ambitions. From running and biking to chasing her next professional goal, Jonica is always on the move.
Her long-term vision includes starting her own business one day, even as she acknowledges the fears that come with that leap. “I’ve learned that common sense often matters more than intelligence,” she says. “Everyone brings something valuable to the table.”
To her peers in the workers’ compensation field, Jonica offers this reminder: “Support goes a long way. Never underestimate the impact you can have by cheering someone else on.”
